This topic is perfect for the times that we are living in today. What is the true role of women? God has a design and a purpose for us that is actually quite different than what many of us were told growing up. The lack of knowledge and the lack of pursuit of God’s design hurts many women, so let’s see what we can do to get back into our proper role as Christian women.

God Created Women to Honor Him

Our primary purpose and responsibility is to honor God. As Christians, it is our role as women to seek God first and desire to please Him. We can do this when we are obedient to His Word, live a life that glorifies Him, and consider Him in all we do.

God loves us and desires to have a genuine relationship with us. He created us for Himself. He sacrificed and gave up His only begotten Son to die on the cross for our sins so that we can be in right standing with Him. As a result, when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we can spend eternity with God.

For your Maker is your husband,

The Lord of hosts is His name;

And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;

He is called the God of the whole earth.

Isaiah 54:5 NLT

It’s important that we remember that someone is always watching us. Our husbands, our children, our co-workers, friends, etc. watch us and are influenced by us. When we are intentional about honoring God with our lives, we set an example and become a light to those who are around us.

In this verse below, it’s important to note that we are all older than someone. Let’s seek to honor God with our lives while being a witness to those who cross our paths.

Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers.[a] Instead, they should teach others what is good

Titus 2:3 NLT

The Role of a Woman is to be a Wife

Another God-ordained role of a woman is to be a wife. Now, there are some women who may feel that they are called to a lifetime of singleness and have the ability to honor God in that way. However, many women are called to be wives.

But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

1 Corinthians 7:8-9 NKJV

As we study scripture, we find that woman was created for a specific purpose. Her original design was for the man.

Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

1 Corinthians 11:9 NKJV

In the very beginning, God created wonderful things. After He created man (Adam) He declared that it was not good for him to be alone. This is why Eve was created so that Adam would not be alone.

God clearly stated His purpose for creating a woman. It is not good that man should be alone. Not only that, He also said what He expected the woman to do. She was created to be a helper to Him.

And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

Genesis 2:18 NKJV

These scriptures give us insight into God’s original design and purpose for women. If we are married, one of our roles is to be a help-meet/helper to our husbands.

The Bible also gives very specific instructions as to how women should treat their husbands and vice versa. Wives are called to respect and submit to their husbands and their authority.

God Designed Women to Be Mothers

God also designed women to be mothers. Biologically, He designed our bodies to conceive, carry, birth, and feed our children. Again, this is not to say that every woman on the planet will birth to children. However, women are called to be mothers. This includes being a spiritual mother to younger women, adopting if called to do so, mentoring young girls, etc.

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that [a]moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1:28 NKJV

The above scripture shows us that it was God’s intention for man and woman to be fruitful and multiply. This includes having children and raising them to live for Jesus.

The Bible also gives instructions for women to teach other younger women to love their husbands and children.

…that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children.

Titus 2:4

I truly believe that if a woman is dealing with infertility and she desires to have children, the Lord will grant her heart’s desires. Hannah in the Bible is a great example of this.

An amazing book that I highly recommend is Supernatural Childbirth. It is an incredible book for women in all stages of pregnancy and birth, including those dealing with infertility or miscarriages.

There is power in God’s word and faith can move mountains. Nothing is impossible with God.

God Intended the Role of Women to Include Keeping the Home

The fourth primary role of women is to be keepers of the home. This role is one that is often neglected and not taught enough nowadays. However, the Bible instructs that women be taught to be homemakers.

that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

Titus 2:4-5 NKJV

A homemaker is one who looks after the home, manages the household, raises the kids, and does housework. A homemaker generally does not work outside of the home as her husband is generally the one employed outside the home and provides for the family.

She watches over the ways of her household,

And does not eat the bread of idleness.

Proverbs 31:27 NKJV

Of course, everyone’s situation is unique and different. Especially in our culture today. However, it is often harmful when the world teaches women to prioritize getting a degree, working up the corporate ladder, building an empire, and being a boss babe.

Such an agenda is contrary to what is explicitly stated in God’s word. His original design is that women are to love their husbands and children and be keepers of their homes.

Since this is God’s intent for women, we must trust and believe that God will be the ultimate Provider for us and our families as we seek to do what He has called us to do as women.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Matthew 6:33 NKJV

How to Live a Fulfilling Life as a Woman

When we stick with God’s blueprint for our lives, we can rest assured that we can’t go wrong. This doesn’t mean that we won’t ever experience challenges or difficulties. Everyone will experience trials while here on Earth.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you [a]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33 NKJV

However, it does mean that we will find the fulfillment, peace, and joy we are looking for when we are obedient to God. As women, we are called to prioritize our relationship with God first, then our husbands, then our children, and the affairs of our home.

Once these things are properly aligned and a woman has the time and energy to also start a home-based business, ministry, etc. then she may do so. We see that example with the Proverbs 31 woman. She prioritized her family and their needs and her home and she was also able to be an entrepreneur without it detracting from her God-given role.

Unfortunately, this has become a hot-button topic in today’s society where anything goes. But as Christians, it’s important to remember that God doesn’t change. If it is in His word, we must do our due diligence to be obedient because He doesn’t make mistakes and He knows what’s best for the women whom He created.

Not only are we called to honor God, and be loving wives, mothers, and homemakers, but we are also instructed to teach younger women to do the same. We have the ability to make more of an impact than we think.

  1. I love how you emphasize the importance of our roles as wives and mothers, but also recognize that each of us will have a different God-given journey!

  2. I find the value of keeping a home gets overlooked in our society. I do think that having a career is a valid option for women (even the Proverbs 31 woman was a businesswoman) but ultimately what lasts forever is not careers or empires, etc., but people. Tending those little (and big) people has eternal value. 🙂
