Many children of the current generation are struggling with fear. The spirit of fear is genuine even for children. Today, we’re going to go in-depth and explore two practical ways to protect your children against the spirit of fear.

Guard Their Hearts

You may be familiar with the phrase “Guard your heart.”  You may have even heard of Proverbs 4:23 from the New Living Translation which says,

Guard your heart above all else,

for it determines the course of your life.

Proverbs 4:23 NLT

Not only do we need to guard our own hearts, but we also have the responsibility to guard our children’s hearts as well. When they are young, this is of utmost importance as mothers.

The earlier we are able to begin the better. We can practice guarding our children’s hearts at an early age. When they’re little, we can use stories from the bible to teach and instill God’s word. We can guard our children’s hearts at any age in their young lives.

But, what does it look like to guard their hearts?

Eye Gates

One way we can guard their hearts is by being mindful of the things they watch and see. We can do this most easily when our children are very young. Be aware of what they are watching on TV, in movies, video games, and devices.

When you’re out in public, be vigilant and if they become exposed to something that isn’t in line with biblical values, use that moment as a learning moment. Teach your children that what they just saw is contrary to God’s word.

The teaching doesn’t end there. As your children get older, they will not be with you 24/7 so it’s a great idea to teach them how to guard their own eye-gates as well. Teach them what is appropriate and what is not appropriate to watch. Set boundaries and explain the purpose of such boundaries. Teach them what God says about certain topics and instill His values into their hearts.

The Bible says,

Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6

This means that we must intentionally train our children and teach them right from wrong. Help them understand good and evil. Teach them the heart of God and what pleases and displeases Him along with the benefits and consequences of both.

Don’t allow demonic, scary, horror shows, movies, books, etc into your home. Fast forward or change the channel when frightening ads or commercials come up. The goal here is to keep that spirit out of your home.

Ear Gates

The same applies to the ear gates. Monitor what your children listen to. This isn’t just limited to music but can include the things that are spoken in TV shows, video games, commercials, audiobooks, conversations, etc.

We can apply the same procedures as we would with the eye gates. Set boundaries, teach, train, and educate your children.

Music is huge because it impacts us greatly. Songs stay with us for years. They are powerful enough to allow demonic spirits into those who listen. Those spirits can enter your home. Music affects our mood, emotions, and actions, so please monitor what your kids are listening to.

Instead of hearing fear-inducing topics (including the news), facilitate your children hearing faith-enhancing things.

Focus on Faith

One great thing we can do with our children is focus on faith. Faith drives out fear. Allow them to constantly hear music that honors God and ushers in His presence.

Provide opportunities for them to hear the Bible being read and talked about. Have conversations about the Bible and allow them to hear faith-building messages and podcasts.

Try supporting faith-inspired companies that provide content that will point your child to Jesus. For example, try swapping Netflix for Pureflix in your home.

The key is to cultivate a Christ-centered home where faith thrives. Romans 10:17 says,

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17

We see in this verse that we grow in faith by hearing the word of God.

Try to allow your children frequent exposure to God’s word through various formats. This includes the bible itself, worship music, Christian audiobooks, sermons, podcasts, Christian movies, etc.

The more we hear the word of God, the more we grow in faith. This applies to us as well as our children.

The word of God can also quench any fiery darts the enemy may send surrounding the fear that comes from circumstances or thoughts. Regardless of the catalyst of fear, it can be overcome with faith. Faith can be obtained by hearing the word of God.

If your child has already been exposed to things that induce fear, or they are already struggling with a spirit of fear, combat it with God’s word.

Read bible verses together, in the morning, throughout the day, and before bed. Commit to working together as a family to memorize scriptures that eradicate fear and grow your faith instead. Here are just a few to get you started.

Bible Verses to Overcome Fear

  • 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

  • 1 John 4:18 NKJV

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

  • Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

  • Ephesians 6:10-11 NKJV

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [a]wiles of the devil.

  • Ephesians 6:16-17 NKJV

16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Today, I encourage you to not only protect yourself but also protect your children against the Spirit of Fear.
