The idea never occurred to me to learn how to make brown sugar at home until recently. Until now, I’ve always purchased it from the store and didn’t give it a second thought. One day, during the holiday season my favorite store was completely out of brown sugar and I needed it for a recipe. This scenario led me to discover how to make brown sugar easily at home. The best part is that it only requires 2 ingredients!

Ingredients to Make Brown Sugar

This recipe calls for two simple ingredients: unsulfered molasses and sugar. No cooking is necessary for this recipe.

Unsulfured Molasses

I’d never used it before so it was a new experience. Fortunately, I had just purchased Grandma’s Unsulfered Molasses to make homemade gingerbread man cookies with my family. It was actually why I needed the brown sugar in the first place.

Needless to say, Grandma’s Unsulfered Molasses came and handy and served more than one purpose. I think it’s something that would be great to purchase and bulk and keep on hand.

Unsulfured molasses is made from ripened sugar cane and does not contain any additives like sulfur dioxide. Sulfur Dioxide acts as a preservative to prevent the molasses from spoiling.

Molasses can be a great source of iron, selenium, and copper which can help maintain healthy bones. It also contains some potassium which can be good for healthy blood pressure and heart health.

Sugar

In this recipe I used organic cane sugar, however, you can use other varieties as well. Regular cane sugar, as well as granulated sugar, are other options that can be used in this recipe.

While sugar isn’t the healthiest thing, it’s nice to have the option to choose what kind of sugar you prefer. In this case, I was happy to use the organic cane sugar that I had in my pantry.

Notes

The basic recipe is a 1:1 ratio. 1 cup of sugar to 1 tbsp of molasses. This recipe has been tripled. To make dark brown sugar, increase the molasses: 1 cup of sugar to 2 tbsp of molasses.

Brown sugar lasts for months in an airtight container.

I've read that a trick to soften your brown sugar if it gets hard is to place a slice of bread in a container of brown sugar and leave it in for several hours.
