Teach Stories of the Bible Using Activities

Since we’re talking about teaching toddlers, we want to keep them as engaged as possible. In some instances, you may be able to read a brief story before they get antsy or try to run away to play. When we embed the stories into fun activities we can hold their attention a little longer.

Bible stories should become a part of your family’s routine. You want your children to become familiar & comfortable with reading, learning, and talking about God’s word. For more ideas and resources on how to do this, be sure to read my previous blog post Using Bible Lessons for Toddlers is Amazing, Here’s Why.

I recommend reading the bible story at least once even if your little one does get antsy. You can even read it to them as they play if needed. Then, use different activities throughout the week(s) to reinforce the Bible story that you are teaching.

See below for some fun activities & ideas to try.

1. Sing Songs About the Bible Stories

Singing songs and even dancing while singing the songs are great ways to get God’s word in your child’s heart. Some songs are great to sing with specific Bible stories. For example,  “Who Built The Ark”, “Father Abraham”, and “Little David, Play on Your Harp”, are some great examples of songs that match perfectly with stories. Youtube or even Wee Sing Bible Songs CD is great for this!

2. Bible Story Arts and Crafts

Crafts are a fun activity to include when teaching Bible stories for toddlers. There are coloring sheets, painting crafts, and so many cute and fun ways to use art to teach the Bible. If you don’t have time to come up with ideas for crafts, try Pinterest or use a curriculum that provides ideas for you. Currently, my favorite curriculum is God’s Little Explorers!

3. Act it Out

After reading the Bible story, have fun by acting it out! Collect all your child’s stuffed animals to reenact Noah’s Ark! Pretend to be like Adam and Eve and enjoy eating various fruits from the “garden”. Act out Abraham’s story by building a tent to play in or using blocks to build a tower like the Tower of Babel! These are fun activities that your child is likely to remember.

4. Use Technology

If your child gets screen time, why not use it to instill the Word of God? Download Bible App for Kids if you don’t have it. It’s a great resource! You can also download Bible games and stories for your child to enjoy.

5. Use a Colorful Bible for Toddlers & Be Animated

Try reading a colorful Bible storybook for toddlers. As you read, be animated by changing your voice, making sound effects, and using gestures. My First Book of Bible Stories – Children’s Padded Board Book is a great one for toddlers! Check out my free resource guide for a list of my favorite Bibles for toddlers & kids.

6. Use Snacks to Teach Bible Stories

Who wouldn’t enjoy a yummy snack while learning about the Bible? Make and eat some stew for Jacob and Esau or use Animal Crackers for Noah’s Ark. Snack on Goldfish Crackers while discussing Peter trying to catch fish, or Bugles for Joshua and the Walls of Jericho. You can be creative or keep it simple. Your child will be happy to have a tasty snack!

7. Use Puppets

Try using puppets or your toddler’s favorite doll or action figure to read the bible story and ask questions.

8. Play!

Use toys, stuffed animals, sidewalk chalk, water play, sensory bins, etc. to teach the Bible in a super fun way!

Final Thoughts

Teach the same Bible story using different activities. Repetition is great for toddlers, so you can teach the same story in different ways. The variety will keep it fresh, fun, and memorable. Once your child knows the story, repeat the process with a new Bible story.

I hope you’ve found these ideas helpful and that your creative juices are flowing! This is such a sweet, fun, memorable, and valuable time with you and your toddler. But remember, no matter how you do it, the important thing is to commit to teaching your child God’s word at an early age! Enjoy!
