Day 60 Numbers 14-15, Psalm 90
In today’s text, the Israelite camp has been thrown into chaos as a result of the fearful report of the ten spies. The people now want to choose another leader and go back to Egypt. They are so afraid and in agreement with a negative report that they are willing to doubt God and turn away from Him. Have you ever been rattled by a bad report and felt so afraid that you were tempted to doubt God or turn away from Him? The doubt of the Israelites turned into fear, and that fear prompted their rebellion. The ten spies died of a plague, and those who wanted to die in the wilderness will get their wish.
Initially, they didn’t believe God’s promise to take them into the promised land, but they did believe Him when He said they’d die in the wilderness. Why is it easier for some to accept the consequences of sin than it is the blessings of obedience? In all of this tragedy, Moses writes the prayer in Psalm 90. “Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
May your heart desire to please and obey God. Be in constant remembrance of who God is, just as the tassels on the corners of the Israelite’s garments were to remind them.
