Day 24: Genesis 35-37 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 24: Genesis 35-37

In Genesis 35, God speaks to Jacob in the middle of his family drama. Jacob is aware of his need for God, and he listens. God instructs him to go to Bethel and build an altar.

Jacob obeyed. He told his household to get rid of their idols, purify themselves, and change their garments. Jacob really steps into his leadership role, and his household obeys, giving up their idols and earrings, and he hides them under a tree near Shechem.

As his story continues, Rachel dies while giving birth to Benjamin. I’m convinced the curse Jacob spoke of in the chapters before was a contributing factor. Remember, he said, may the person who stole the idols die. It was Rachel who stole her father, Laban's, idols. See Genesis 31:32. This is also the chapter where Isaac dies of old age, full of days, and Jacob and Esau bury him cooperatively. Isaac actually died 20 years after he thought he would.

Chapter 36 is the genealogical record of Esau and his descendants. This brings closure to his lineage and serves as an account that God did as He promised in growing him into a nation (the Edomites).

Our reading for the day concludes with Joseph. His father, Jacob, demonstrates his favoritism with the gift of a long-sleeved tunic. This tunic is a symbol of the privilege of a firstborn son. Joseph's brothers are not happy about this. They hate him.  To add fuel to the fire, he has two dreams and shares them with his family. Unbeknownst to his family, Joseph's dreams are prophetic. His family will one day bow before him, but at present, his dreams anger his brothers and make them more jealous.

This is a reminder that when God shares things with us, sometimes it's best to hold them in our hearts. Before careful with who you share things with.

Joseph's brothers plot to kill him to ensure that his dreams can't come to pass. He ends up being sold into slavery, but God has great plans for him even in something so tragic.

No matter what you're going through, God has a plan, and nothing is too tough for Him to work together for your good and for His glory. (Romans 8:28)
