Day 99 1 Samuel 4-8 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 99 1 Samuel 4-8

Israel loses a battle with the Philistines and believes the LORD defeated them. Instead of consulting God Himself, they decided to take the Ark of the Covenant with them into battle as if it would provide them with good “luck”. The ark is stolen, and Eli and his two wicked sons die. The Philistines believe they have defeated and captured God, and through a series of events, God makes it clear that is not the case.

Samuel is Israel’s leader, priest, prophet, and judge, and he encourages Israel to repent. They do, and God grants them victory over the Philistines. Samuel has two sons who are judges, and they don’t obey God. The elders tell Samuel they don’t want his sons as leaders because they don’t walk in the ways of the LORD. This is the moment when Israel asks for a king, which means they are rejecting God. They want to be like the other nations that have kings. Samuel warns them that it won’t go well for them if they have a king, but they don’t care; they want one anyway. This passage is a reminder not to be driven by fear of man. We should seek only God’s approval of us. His acceptance and approval are all that matter.
