Day 83 Joshua 5-8 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 83 Joshua 5-8

In today’s reading, we begin with the new generation of Israelites being circumcised once they set foot in the promised land as a nation. They prepare their hearts for battle not only by circumcision but also by having their first Passover in the land. This is when the manna that they ate for 40 years finally stopped. Now, they will no longer eat manna because they can eat the produce of the land. This demonstrates God’s precise provision; there was no lack from one source of food to the next.

Jericho is the first city that the Israelites took, which leads us to the story of Joshua and the walls of Jericho, which you are most likely familiar with. Rahab and her family were spared and lived in Israel, and Joshua pronounced a curse on the person who rebuilds the city of Jericho that was burned down.

Joshua sent some men to take the city of Ai, but he didn’t consult with God first, and 36 Israelite men were killed by Ai. When Joshua grieved and consulted God about it, God told him that there was sin among the people. Achan was disobedient; he coveted and took things that he was instructed not to, and his sin prevented God from being with the Israelites until the sin was dealt with. Once Achan was stoned and burned, the people of Israel were able to take the city of Ai and burn it down. Fire was God’s judgment on the inhabitants because of their wickedness. (Bible Recap) Afterward, Joshua renewed the covenant with the Israelite people.

We see a clear picture of God’s faithfulness and provision. He is with us, but we must maintain pure hearts before Him and walk in obedience.
