Day 78 Deuteronomy 24-27
Deuteronomy 24 contains the only laws about divorce found in the Old Testament. We also see God’s consistent protective heart for all human life. He continues to ensure the poor, widows, and orphans are taken care of. We should take notes here and pray about what we can do to help those in need.
Some of the laws we read about today can also be seen in the story of Ruth and Boaz. Food left in the field for the widow and the process of the kinsman redeemer are mentioned here and displayed in the book of Ruth.
There is also interesting information regarding punishment for the guilty. They are only allowed to receive 40 lashes and no more. The Jews reduced this to 39 to be safe in case they miscount. Paul says he received this punishment of 39 lashes five times (2 Cor. 11:24). It’s interesting that Jesus also received 39 lashes. He was not guilty, and He wasn’t under Jewish law. He was under Roman law and most likely beaten until He was barely alive. Interesting that it ended up being 39 lashes.
In that same memory of Jesus, we also see a curse in Deuteronomy 27. This curse says, “Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.” This also describes Judas, who took money to betray Jesus even though He was innocent.
