Day 64 Numbers 23-25
The story of Balaam continues, and he gives three oracles. Each time he speaks, Balak wants him to find different angles for cursing Israel, but Balaam just can’t do it. He has to speak what the LORD puts in his mouth. Nothing is weightier than the will of God, and we see here that it will prevail no matter what. Balaam’s words don’t have the power to undo what God has done. During his third oracle, he even quotes what God spoke to Abraham 700 years earlier. “Blessed are those who bless you, and cursed are those who curse you.”
In chapter 25, pagan women lead the Israelite men astray into idolatry, and they begin to worship Baal at Baal-Peor. We will see later that Balaam was actually behind this and devised this plan to corrupt Israel through sexual immorality and idolatry by having the Moabites entice them. His motive was financial gain. However, Israel is still guilty for yielding and doing what they knew was wrong. God sent a plague as a result of this. Also, a son of a chief (Zimri) brought the enemy (a Midianite woman), Cozbi, into his tent during the plague, and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, killed them with a spear. This act ended the plague that killed 24,000 Israelites, stopping the immediate wrath of God.
At the end of the day, the LORD’s will will be done. We cannot change or manipulate His will. He has a plan and a purpose for your life, and His purpose will prevail. We experience ultimate peace and joy when we seek to please Him by obeying His Word. It’s the best blueprint for life.
