Day 62 Numbers 18-20 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 62 Numbers 18-20

Things are beginning to wind down in the book of Numbers. God spoke directly to Aaron regarding how priests and Levites were to care for the temple. It was more common for Him to speak through Moses, but not with this. More people passed away, including about 2 million during the 38 years between chapters 19 and 20 (The Bible Recap).

Miriam, Moses’ sister, a prophetess, and highly regarded among the Israelites, died and was buried in Kadesh. The people complained of no water in Mirebah. This is likely a new generation, and the first has died off. This means that this generation is continuing with the same spirit of grumbling and complaining that we saw in the first generation.

God told Moses to speak to the rock to bring water out for the people. However, 120-year-old Moses reverted to the instructions he received from God in Exodus 17, and he decided to strike the rock two times. Water did come out for the people, but Moses disobeyed God. Aaron and Moses were prohibited from entering Canaan as a result of that decision.

Therefore, God told Moses to strip Aaron of his priestly garments and put them on his son, Eleazar. Eleazar was going to take over for his dad, and Aaron died right there on Mount Hor. Moses and Eleazar went down from the mountain, and the people of Israel wept for Aaron for a month.

This is a reminder of just how important it is to be obedient to God. We may be tempted to do something He told us to do before or to do the thing that makes more sense. We may even be tempted to make a different decision out of frustration or fear, but we must not surrender to this temptation. It is always best to obey God and His commands and instructions completely and to a tee. He has a reason for why He tells us to do things a certain way. Obedience is key.
