Day 61 Numbers 16-17 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 61 Numbers 16-17

In today’s passages, Korah, a Kohathite (one who guards the holy vessels), conspires against Moses and Aaron. He is their first cousin and wants more power and influence. He doesn’t believe that Moses and Aaron should be the only ones who do what they do, since he is a Levite just like they are. They are all set apart. Moses takes it before God, Who is then ready to kill those who are rebelling, but Moses intercedes for them. Korah and his household end up being swallowed in a sinkhole and went down alive into Sheol (the grave/realm of the dead). 250 men who rebelled with Korah and were offering (unauthorized) incense were consumed by fire.

The next day, the people grumbled against Moses and Aaron and accused them of killing the people. As a result, the LORD sent a plague that killed 14,700 people. Moses and Aaron prevented it from killing more by having Aaron risk his life and run in the midst of the dead and the living (Aaron, as a priest, was not to be near dead bodies lest he die). This was the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s word that this generation would die in the wilderness.

Lastly, to confirm that Aaron was the chosen high priest, God caused Aaron’s staff to sprout almonds overnight. After this act, the people repented.

This is a reminder to be grateful and trust God and His ways as He knows what is best. He knows the heart of every man. It is in our best interest to maintain pure hearts before the Lord and choose praise and gratitude instead of complaining and grumbling. God is good to us and deserves all the praise.
