Day 55 Numbers 3-4
Chapter 3 opens with Aaron and his two living sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, being established by God as heads of the tabernacle. The LORD calls for three different censuses. In the first, the Levites are selected to represent the firstborns from all the other tribes. The Levites are considered God’s firstborn. The second is when the Levites are selected to represent the families as the firstborn. They are 273 Levites short, so the families that aren’t represented by a Levite can donate 5 shekels to the tabernacle instead. The third is when men aged 30-50 years old are instructed to carry the items when the tabernacle is transported to a new spot. Three specific clans are given specific duties and assignments in taking care of the tabernacle. The Gershonites are to carry curtains, coverings, and fabric-related items. The Merarites are to carry poles, pillars, and tent pegs. The Kohathites are to guard the holy vessels like the ark and the lampstand. They have the most important role. Moses and Aaron (Aaron is the firstborn) are also Kohathites.
The Levites are a smaller clan, a minority. Yet, the LORD gave them a place of honor, close to Himself. Whenever you feel like your role or assignment is small, not enough, or too far in the background to be important, think again. God sees you, and He is pleased by your service unto Him as long as you continue to serve Him with the right heart. There is no job too small. We all need each other in the Body of Christ.
