Day 54 Numbers 1-2 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 54 Numbers 1-2

Today’s reading is the beginning of the book of Numbers. While Numbers is considered to be written by an Anonymous author, scholars believe that Moses is the author because we know that Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, known as the Torah or Pentateuch. This book picks up where Exodus left off with the first generation of Israelites, but it ends with the second generation of Israelites being on the verge of entering the Promised Land.

In chapter 1, the LORD spoke to Moses and instructed Him to take a census of all the men 20 years and older. Usually, a census is taken in preparation for war. The tribe of Judah is the largest of all tribes, which aligns with Jacob/Israel’s prophecy over 400 years before. The Levites are exempted and not included in the census because they are to take care of the tabernacle. The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh are included because Jacob/Israel had adopted them as his own in the inheritance.

In chapter 2, the LORD gives Moses and Aaron instructions on how to arrange the camp of tribes. Each tribe has a banner, and when they are positioned in the order God gives, their entire camp makes the shape of a cross. The people of Israel listed in their camps totaled 603, 550 people!

This reminds me once again of just how strategic and intentional God is. There is a reason and a purpose for the things that He does. This is why it’s important that when He gives us instructions and tells us to do something, we ensure that we are obedient and do exactly as He instructs. His ways are perfect and in alignment with His plan, not only for our lives, but also for all of humanity.
