Day 49 Leviticus 16-18
The LORD spoke to Moses and gave him instructions for the Day of Atonement. This is also known as Yom Kippur. It is the day of “covering for sins”, and the Israelites were to observe it through fasting and prayer. We see the concept of a scapegoat. The people’s sins were laid on the head of the goat and led out of the camp and into the wilderness. Now, Jesus is our scapegoat. He took our sins upon Himself so that we can be free of them. Jesus made atonement for our sins once and for all.
By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10
Some Israelites were offering sacrifices to goat demons, which is considered spiritual whoredom/prostitution. The LORD instructs them not to consume blood as the pagans do. Blood is atonement for God’s people.
The LORD also provides parameters for Israel’s sexual practices. They were to be different than those of Egypt and Canaan. He prohibits incest, adultery, incest, homosexuality, bigamy, and bestiality. He also prohibits sacrificing children to Molech.
Today’s takeaway:
- God is a clear communicator. God is an excellent communicator. He loves us and desires a relationship with us, and He makes His expectations for the relationship very clear. He is holy, and He wants His beloved to be holy just like Him. He makes it possible. He expresses what he likes and dislikes. He explains what is okay and what is not okay. All we have to do is read His Word, pay attention, and take heed to what He is saying. When we are doers of His Word, we are blessed, and we find joy, peace, and satisfaction that can’t be found anywhere else!
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22-2
