Day 44 Leviticus 1-4 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 44 Leviticus 1-4

Although the book of Exodus has concluded, we continue with the story of the Israelites and Moses in the book of Leviticus. In this book, we see God graciously making a way for His people to live in His presence. The name Leviticusis derived from the attention that is given to the Levites and their role as priests. The LORD speaks to Moses and gives Him instructions for how to worship Him properly. These first four chapters explain four of the five different kinds of offerings. There are Burnt Offerings for sin and atonement, Grain Offerings to acknowledge dependence on God, Peace Offerings for fellowship with God, Sin Offerings for forgiveness of unintentional sins, and Guilt Offerings, which we will learn about tomorrow.

Today’s takeaway:

  • Animal sacrifice had a purpose. Some people get caught up in the fact that animals had to die daily. Animals were for atonement, which means to cover the sins of the people. God provided a way for His people’s sins to be covered (atoned) through the use of animals. The Israelites were to lay their hand on the head of the animal, and the animal would die for the person’s sin instead of the person having to die for their own sin. This is a sacrifice. The sacrifice took the place of the human. Animals had to die when sin entered the world through Adam and Eve.

During that time, when sin entered, death entered. It was the first time an animal had to be killed in order for God to provide clothes for Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness. While it is sad for the animals, it was a gift for the Israelites because it was the way that God provided so that their sins could be forgiven and they would be redeemed from death. Now, we don’t have to sacrifice animals because Jesus was our sacrifice and He allowed His blood to be shed so that we can be redeemed. He died for our sin that we don’t have to. What a gift! God cares and loves us so much that He went through great lengths to ensure the atonement of our sin.
