Day 13: Job 35-37
Elihu continues to speak, and as he does, he seems to grow more and more harsh toward Job, even though he said he’d be easy on him. He even claims to speak on behalf of God, and he tells Job that he is telling the truth because he is perfect in knowledge.
In the Bible Recap, Tara-Leigh Cobble points out that Elihu says that godless people cherish anger. We see this in Job 36:13. Ironically, when we were introduced to Elihu in chapter 32, he was angry.
Selfish anger is unrighteous anger. When we cherish unrighteous anger, it leads to self-righteousness. In this, there is no desire to forgive the person we’re angry with. This can lead to bitterness and arrogance. It appears this could be the path that Elihu is on.
Here is a visual:
Unrighteous anger→self-righteousness→unforgiveness→bitterness & arrogance: it’s all sin
This makes me think of the scripture that says, “Be angry and sin not”. Unrighteous anger is a door that lets the enemy in.
Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,
Ephesians 4:26
This is a great reminder to us to keep this door closed by practicing self-control in anger, forgiving others freely, and not allowing bitterness and pride in our hearts. We must remain humble.
This also makes me think from the perspective of a mother. We often hear people talk about moms struggling with anger toward their children. These same rules apply. If you are a mom struggling with anger, ask God to teach you how to parent with a humble heart. God draws near to those who are humble. We are all learning, growing, and in need of grace and mercy in life.
In Chapter 37, we see Elihu proclaim God’s majesty! It’s good to stop and consider the incredible works of God. He shows Himself exalted in power.
At the end of the day, it’s all about God. This is His Story. Satan meant Job’s trial for evil, but God used it to purify Job and glorify Himself.
“Whatever God intends to teach you through your trials is always for your benefit.” (Tony Evans Commentary)
