Day 4: Job 1-5
Today's bible study notes are from Job 1-5. This is a chronological study, which is why it's day 4 and we're already diving into the book of Job. The author of this book is unknown.
The book begins by introducing a wealthy man named Job who is described as being blameless and upright. He was a godly man. One day, Satan entered the presence of God and engaged Him in dialogue. Satan asked to interfere with Job to prove that he wouldn't love and be faithful to God when things weren't going well for him. God granted Satan limited authority regarding Job.
Job lost his family (10 children), his health, and his wealth all in the matter of a day. He became unrecognizable. His 3 friends came to see him, but after 7 days of sitting in silence with him during his grief, they became unkind and accused him of sinning since things were so bad for him. Job was miserable and wished to live no longer.
His first conversation is with his friend Eliphaz. He tells Job to admit that he sinned and to receive God's correction. (Job was blameless- he had not sinned against God.) While he made some biblical points, overall, his advice to Job was no good. His advice was rooted in his own logic and beliefs.
Job suffered trials even though he had not sinned. This parallels Jesus, who also suffered and had not sinned. It's a reminder that not every bad thing that happens is a result of sin. God's ways and thoughts are not like ours, but He absolutely knows what He is doing, and He works everything out for the good of those who love him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 12:2)
