Day 2: Genesis 4-7 Chronological Bible Study Notes

Day 2: Genesis 4-7

I'm excited to have you join me on my bible study journey! I am bible journaling chronologically through the bible for 365 days.  I utilize resources such as commentary, cross-referencing, and the list below to conduct a thorough examination and gain a deeper understanding of what the Word of God is saying. I do this in addition to listening to the Audible version of the Bible with my family, as well.

Be led by the Holy Spirit. I pray that my notes encourage you on your journey!

This is a grace-filled space. Come as you are. Participate as life allows. If you’d like, comment below and share something that stood out to you in today’s study—your reflection may be exactly what another sister needs to read.

Chapter 4 Cain, Abel, and Lamech (Introduction of Bloodlines)

  • Adam and Eve had many children.
  •  The 2 mentioned in chapter 4 are Cain and Abel.
  • Cain offered God fruit from the ground that was cursed.
  • Able practiced dominion over the animals and offered a blood sacrifice just as God commanded them to do.
  • Able was humble and obedient.
  • Cain was prideful and rebellious.
  • God rejected Cain’s offering, which made Cain mad and sad/depressed.
  • God warned Cain and gave him the opportunity to get control of his emotions because sin was crouching at the door, wanting Cain.
  • Emotional problems can be cured with spiritual alignment.
  • Cain chose not to rule over sin. He was born with morality, and he knew right from wrong even before the 10 commandments were given to Moses in Exodus.
  • Cain nurtured his negative thoughts and emotions, which led to sin, and he murdered his brother.
  • Cain repeated some of his father’s mistakes and ended up with similar consequences. Losing the opportunity to dwell and fellowship intimately with God.
  • God loved and protected Cain even in his sin. However, God also disciplined Cain and gave him consequences for his actions.
  • God’s love is relentless, but His laws and holiness are indisputable.
  • Lamech was part of Cain’s lineage. He boasted about killing a man who hurt him. He also introduced polygamy and took two wives.
  • Lamech was prideful and rebellious, just like his great-great-great-grandfather, Cain.
  • Pride and rebellion and murder entered Cain’s bloodline through his sin.
  • God resists the proud→1 Peter 5:5-6, James 4:6-7
  • Cain’s wife was either one of his sisters or nieces.
  • Incest had not been banned by God yet. There was no genetic load for mutations to occur. Incest was the way to populate the earth at the time.

Chapter 5: Adam’s Genealogy up to Noah (Godly Family Lineage)

  • Adam lived to be 930 years old and had many children. He was most likely having children while his children and his children’s children were having children. Hence, the explosion of the population of people.
  • Adam and Eve had Seth, who compensated for the death of Abel.
  • Seth was the start of a godly family and lineage that God used
  • Enoch and Lamech were names that were used in Cani and Seth’s lineage. One wicked and prideful, and one righteous and humble.
  • Enoch (Seth’s lineage) walked with God. He had such intimacy with God that He was taken by God after 365 years and did not die.
  • Methuselah lived the longest at 969 years old.

Chapter 6: A Corrupt Wicked World that Leads to Noah and the Flood

  • Fallen angels began to reproduce with human women, producing Nephilim- something God did not create. These were warriors and giants who increased violence and evil on the earth.
  • It is possible that Satan may have tried to corrupt the human bloodline to prevent the Messiah from coming to confuse people as to when the Messiah came, since Nephilim were part spirit and part human.
  • Due to the wickedness, God restricted the human lifespan to 120 years before judgment.
  • God is merciful and compassionate, but He is also a just judge
  • There were no Nephilim in Noah’s bloodline.
  • God intended to destroy everything and start fresh with righteousness.
  • Noah walked with God and found favor with God
  • Noah received his assignment from God: build the ark (even though it was hard, bigger than his capabilities, and he faced opposition and persecution for it)
  • Be obedient in the midst of evil
  • There was only one way (the ark) to be saved from judgment. Now (modern day), there is only one way (Jesus) we can be saved from the forthcoming judgement.
  • The animals came to Noah to be kept alive for reproduction purposes.
  • Noah stored food for himself, his family, and all the animals (ark of safety)

Chapter 7: The Flood Begins & God’s Character

  • Noah also took 7 pairs of clean animals for sacrifices and food to eat (variety of nutrition there too)
  • Only 1 pair of unclean animals was taken- not to be eaten or sacrificed
  • Water came from above and below, destroying all life on land
  • It appears that sea life and ocean animals were not destroyed. I find it interesting that the largest animals that exist today are ocean animals (e.g., blue whale) that never got destroyed during the flood.
  • The flood occurred 1,656 years after Adam was created
  • Godly family=Noah, his wife, their sons, and their sons’ wives
  • During this modern time before judgment, God wants to use godly families to bring more souls into His Kingdom Family. Grow God’s family!
  • God, who fiercely judges sin, also mercifully (through faith) delivers us from it. (Tony Evans’ Commentary)
  • God’s mission is to restore humanity in relationship with Himself. (The Bible Recap)
